Wildlife Watch

Spring Peepers

Have you ever heard a woodland chorus in early spring while exploring the Nature Center grounds? The high-pitched peeps you are hearing are not birds but the sounds of male Spring Peepers trying to attract female mates. One of the first frog species to begin calling after the winter, Spring Peepers will congregate to mate & lay eggs in a very specific habitat called a Vernal Pool. Temporary seasonal wetlands, Vernal Pools are a safe breeding area for many amphibians as they are devoid of predators such as fish.

Did you know that the Spring Peeper is an example of a tree frog in our very own backyards? Click here to find out more.

Be sure to check out our new "Wildlife Watch" kiosk next to the Sugar Shack for more information.
