Adventure Camp Assistant Director

About the New Canaan Nature Center

The New Canaan Nature Center (NCNC) is a not-for-profit environmental education center and sanctuary, based on a 40-acre preserve in the heart of New Canaan, CT. The NCNC's mission is to help people of all ages better understand, appreciate and care for the world of nature.

It works toward this through a diverse range of pre-school, elementary and high school programs, adult horticulture education classes, youth and family programs, and on- and off-site camp and adventure programs.

About the position

Adventure Camp Assistant Director is a full-time, seasonal position that includes overnights and some weekends. The season runs from approximately May 27-August 22, 2008.

Responsibilities

  • Schedule, plan and lead field trip based ecology and adventure camp programs for 4th through 11th graders.
  • Working with the Director of Adventure Camps, train and supervise 2-4 seasonal trip leader staff.
  • Will be responsible for co-leading groups of up to 19 Adventure campers on field trips focusing on ecology and natural history, team building and adventure education. Eco-Rangers programs are 3 to 5 day trip programs with some overnights and are for grades 4-6. Adventurers programs are 5 to 6 day overnight camps that travel to locations such as Nantucket, Adirondacks and Cape Cod
  • Complete seasonal program and budget reports as needed.
  • Help with equipment maintenance and prep and supply ordering for all programs.
  • Some material prep and program planning/set-up on weekends is required.

Qualifications

  • 21+ years of age
  • Environmental education/outdoor education experience, trip leading experience required; experience facilitating canoeing/kayaking, hiking, rafting preferred
  • Supervisory experience a plus
  • Certified in CPR, Lifeguarding with waterfront module, WFR (preferred) or WFA, or willingness to obtain
  • Natural science background preferred
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record, must possess CT Service Bus license or non-CT clean driving history record or have willingness to obtain
  • Enthusiasm for working with children and sense of humor a must

Compensation: $450/week with 3 days of paid vacation and possible free housing.
