Camp Program Director

About the New Canaan Nature Center

The New Canaan Nature Center (NCNC) is a not-for-profit environmental education center and sanctuary, based on a 40-acre preserve in the heart of New Canaan, CT. The NCNC's mission is to help people of all ages better understand, appreciate and care for the world of nature.

It works toward this through a diverse range of pre-school, elementary and high school programs, adult horticulture education classes, youth and family programs, and on- and off-site camp and adventure programs.

About the position

We are seeking a dynamic, professional and motivating leader for this key education role. He or she will be responsible for overseeing the curriculum development and evaluation for summer and vacation camp programs, for taking a lead teaching role in these programs, and for working as part of the larger Education team - led by the Director of Education - to deliver quality environmental education to people of all ages.

Responsibilities

  • developing, managing and evaluating these two large programs;
  • managing a budget of up to $350,000;
  • liaising with regional public and private schools;
  • recruiting, hiring, training and managing summer education interns;
  • overseeing the program's health and safety protocols;
  • working as part of a team, teaching a range of environmental education programs for people of all ages with other members of the environmental education team;
  • and supporting our animal care program.

Requirements

  • Three years of relevant teaching experience with young children, adolescents or young adults;
  • Understanding of formal and non-formal teaching and learning;
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental education or science, or a related field;
  • Supervisory and team management experience (staff, interns or volunteers);
  • Demonstrated skills in curriculum development, teaching and environmental education program evaluation;
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills;
  • Advanced first aid and CPR certification;
  • Valid driver's license for interstate and regional travel;
  • Physical ability to walk and run and lift sporting equipment (including canoes, tents, food coolers, etc.)

Position is year-round. Starting salary range begins in the low 30's.
