2012 Adventure Camp
Adventure Camp has been redesigned and expanded to offer a range of experiences and new challenges for older campers! Gain a greater appreciation for the natural world through guided exploration, high adventure outdoor activities, and overnight camping experiences (ages 10 & up). Our trained staff will challenge your child and the group as they journey through a world of self-discovery and personal growth. Adventure campers will create memories and bonds with other campers as they work towards goals, earn rewards and strive to become master adventurers!
When applicable, travel off-site is coordinated in state-inspected minivans driven by Adventure Camp instructors with clean driving histories.

Ages 8-9 | Ages 10-12 | Ages 11-14 | What to Expect!
APPRENTICE ADVENTURERS (Ages 8 - 10)
Apprentice Adventures learn the basic skills and challenges of nature exploration and each week participate in an extended evening campfire dinner. This group learns the basic tenets of camping and wilderness survival while more deeply exploring the diversity of the Nature Center's 40-acres.
June 18 – August 17
Each one-week session for adventure campers features the following:
- Challenging outdoor activities throughout the 40 acres of forests, fields and ponds of the Nature Center.
- Weekly themes incorporating a range of outdoor learning, challenges and adventures.
- Maximum 14 campers per session with a max counselor-camper ratio of 1:7
- Sessions meet from 9:00AM - 3:30PM, plus extended campfire dinner on Thursdays until 7:00pm

JOURNEYMAN ADVENTURERS (Ages 10 - 12)
This group of will explore the natural wonders of Southwest Connecticut when they travel off-site to thrilling waterways, trails, peaks, gorges and more. Each week they will experience an awesome night of camping under the stars at the Nature Center and learn the basic skills necessary for the next level of Adventure Camp... "Master Adventurers" (ages 11-14).
July 2-6, July 16-20 and July 30-August 3
Each one-week session for adventure campers features the following:
- Off-site field trips plus fun & challenging outdoor activities throughout the 40 acres of forests, fields and ponds of the Nature Center.
- One overnight camping experience out in the Nature Center “wilds” (campers bring their own sleeping bag, sleeping pad & backpack).
- Maximum 14 campers per session with a max counselor-camper ratio of 1:7
- Sessions meet from 9:00AM - 3:30PM (except when on an overnight campout)
2012 Sessions
Animal Trackers(July 2-6, no camp July 4)
Cost:   $375
Come with us on an animal exploration adventure. The New Canaan Nature Center has over fifty animals in our care for us to discover and learn from up close, but we will not stop there. Southwest Connecticut’s forests, fields, ponds, shoreline, and streams all have a wonderful variety of animals for us to track, locate and study. We will study sea creatures we catch in our seine net while at Sherwood Island, go birding and hiking at local Audubon sites, and find many more resident denizens of the outdoors as we explore the wonders of Southwest Connecticut. We will cap off the week with a trip to the world famous Bronx Zoo.
Venture Bound(July 16-20)
Cost:   $445
Join us on some of the most exciting trails our local preserves, forests and parks have to offer. We will explore a variety of natural habitats such as Devil’s Den Nature Preserve and Ward Pound Ridge or even take in breathtaking views from atop Bear Mountain. We’ll also challenge our group with an amazing zipline canopy adventure. If you enjoy hiking and exploring, you will love this week of Adventure Camp.
Wetlanders Quest(July 30-August 3)
Cost:   $445
This week is all about exploring our amazing local waterways and wetlands. We will take our canoes up to Burr Pond, swim and splash at the beach, plus visit local hidden waterfalls and water holes such as Saugatuck Falls. We’ll even investigate a real beaver dam! We want to help you cool down on one of the hottest weeks of the year, so come join us for this water-filled adventure.
MASTER ADVENTURERS (Ages 11 - 14)
Master Adventurers head off on guided 5-6 day expeditions to hike, paddle and experience the thrill of the wilderness from the Green Mountains to the Finger Lakes and beyond. Campers spend the first day of the session at the Nature Center checking and assembling gear, learning about equipment use and safety, practicing basic skills and doing team building exercises on our Low Ropes course to prepare for the adventure.

2012 Sessions
Green Mountain Expedition(July 9-13)
Cost:   $795
Head to the Green Mountains of Vermont to tackle a phenomenal section of the Appalachian Trail (AT)! We’ll set up an outpost to assist AT thru-hikers on their way from Georgia to Maine and hike to some amazing vistas and lookouts ourselves. Our adventure will also include a thrilling zoom down Okemo Mountain on alpine coasters to top off another day of this extreme expedition.
Canoe Voyager Expedition(July 23-28, returns on Saturday)
Cost:   $825
Join us as we explore some of the most spectacular natural water wonders the United Sates has to offer. We will camp and canoe on the picturesque Finger Lakes of New York and visit some of the biggest and baddest waterfalls in the United States: Niagara and Taughannock Falls. We will also enjoy fishing, hiking and swimming in and around Cayuga and Seneca Lakes, the largest and grandest of the Finger Lakes.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Since this is Adventure Camp, we highly recommended that campers arrive dressed appropriately and with the right gear. This includes closed-toe shoes that can get wet (we suggest something like a Keen sandal or Crocs) and clothes that can be dirtied. A pack list for our overnight adventures will be provided as we get closer to these days.
The majority of our days will be spent outdoors so we ask you please equip your child with the following:
- Sunscreen
- Bug Spray (if they are susceptible to bites)
- Water bottle
- Rain gear
- Hat or sunglasses
- Day pack to carry supplies (including their lunch)
- Lunch
- Closed-toe shoes
- Closed-toe water shoes
- For offsite days, please also include a swimsuit and towel as we may be getting wet.
