Eco-friendly Living

Energy Conservation

Replace a regular incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb (cfl): CFLs use 60% less energy than a regular bulb.
Move your thermostat down 2° in winter and up 2° in summer: You could save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year
Install a programmable thermostat: You can save $100 per year on your energy bill.
Choose Energy Star appliances when making new purchases: If each household in the U.S. replaced its existing appliances with the most efficient models available, we’d eliminate 175 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year!
Unplug electronic devices you’re not using them: Sixty to 80 percent of the electricity they use is consumed while they’re idle, powering light displays and “instant on” features.
Explore ways to use renewable energy: Tax credits and advice are available from federal and state goverment websites.
Buy locally grown foods: Buy food that is grown locally to support Connecticut's farmers and reduce food packaging and transportation emissions.
Buy a Hybrid car: Hybrid cars rated at 40 miles/gallon or greater are exempt from CT sales tax until October 1, 2008. There are also federal income tax credits of up to $3,400 for hybrid vehicles.
